A Customer Remembers

I remember the first time I walked into A Spot for Tea Room. The room had a Victorian look. The flowers on the table and the black tables adorned with red and pink flowers table cloth. I found the room very cozy and wonderfully elegant,I bought my first tea pot and matching cups from the Tea Room. I was introduced to several a authors and wonderful characters through the TALKING OVER TEA CUPS BOOK CLUB.The members were introduced to Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop and her staff Haley, the cook, Drayton. connoisseur of tea. We found them in Death by Darjeeling, Gun Powder Green, Shades of Earl Grey, The English Breakfast Murder, The Jasmine Moon Murder, Chamomile Mourning, Blood Orange Brewing, The Silver Needle Murder, and Oolong Dead written by Laura Child. We caught a glimpse of what it is like to run a tea room and fabulous recipes at the end of the story.We were introduced to The Mitford Series by Jan Karon. We lived Father Tim's life. We met his wife Cynthia, her cat Violet, his adopted son, Dooley, Other people we met was Lacy Turner, Aunt Sadie, and who could forget Uncle Billy. We learned how to share our faith and Father Tim's ultimate prayer, Thy will be done in making decissions for our lives.Sarah Addison Allen in Garden Spells taught us about edible flowers and their influences on people. We met in the lovely Red Room. We ate our favorite foods and drank our favorite tea from the menu.Special events for me. I had my birtmhday teas, retirement party tea and two mother day teas in the beautiful Queen's Room. My friends and I had fun wearing hats and fur stoles.I remember opening night of the new Spot for Tea. The beautifully painted walls, the wall paperon the walls with garden scenes (other scenes), and the beautiful water falls and the new rooms, Green and Red private rooms, Rose Cottage room for dress up parties and afternoon teas in the Queens Room.Yes, I remember that you gave so much and your rewards are great. I was in Oklahoma City visiting my sister during Thanksgiving Holiday weekend and we had lunch at you delightful place on Saturday. I cannot express the joy and delight we had that day. The decor was beautiful and the food was absolutely to die for.

It made our day so enjoyable. We were able to see a tea party for a little girl as they came through the dining area and it was perfect.

I have loved tea parties ever since I was a little girl and I have collected tea sets of every size and shape over the last 20 years, so to say I was so delighted to find your beautiful shop is an understatement.

I am from a very old southern antebellum community in Mississippi and we have nothing here to compare.

I research areas I travel to to find tea parlors to visit and yours has been the most memorable of all.

PC Child Nutrition Event

December 2, 2010

Its early morning on December 3rd. I was at the tearoom until 8:30pm last night. We had a Christmas party for the PC Child Nutrition Team at Walnut Creek. I literally stood at the register all day trying to help Miss Jamie with the line. So many of you have been so kind to offer hugs and support during this time of our transition. It always does my heart good when the tearoom is full and overflowing. It must have something to do with being a Preacher's Kid...you know my dad use to say the same thing about a full sanctuary. I can remember after church on the way home he would always go through in his mind the folks he didn't see there and would comment about missing them. I have found myself doing the same thing as I am saying goodbye to each one of my wonderful customers.

I got two more emails yesterday that I wanted to share that made my day.

"I am really sorry to see that you are closing, my two highschool friends & I meet there once in a while to have lunch. In fact we were in there jst today. We had the Chicken, Artichoke Casserole and it was super delicious. Can I get the recipe? If you ever decide to open another Tea Room, I'll be back. " - Loyce Ann Peard

Happy Thanksgiving

I'm thankful for friends and family and today we had some special visitors at the tearoom.

Michelle & Joel Reasoner are visiting from Yakima, Washington.

Michelle worked for A Spot For Tea while she was here going to college.

Congratulations Michelle & Joel...they're expecting their first baby in July.

They will be missionaries to Russia soon...it was so good to see them both and share their good news.

My good friend Susan Craton is here visiting her mom Jimmie Lee from Arkansas.

I have known Susan since I was in 8th grade living in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Susan has been a wonderful friend to me all these years....she's like the big sister I never had.

We will be closed tomorrow for Thanksgiving so everyone can enjoy the holiday with their loved ones.

Return Visit

In February I wrote about my ten year anniversary doing dress up tea parties.

During the red room event on Saturday, Kristen came and found me and said there was a lady looking for me who had a tea party with me years ago.

My first tea party girl is now 24 years old and is an aspiring artist and teacher.

Brittany Atterbury is all grown up and looking beautiful.

She gave me her business card which I am sharing with all of you if you need someone for murals, or face painting or art teacher.

Its so fun for the party girls to come back in....its always exciting to see where they are now.

On Saturday we had a very distinguished guest. She was visiting SNU and speaking at Bethany First Church. Barbie Moore is a good customer who is seated in the center. She brought the Ambassador for tea. It was an honor to serve this beautiful Christian lady.

Visit from Susie

Our dear friend and customer Susie Burke was visiting from Illinois. Linda and Dolores were also celebrating Dolores' retirement. Congratulations! Its always such a treat to have Susie come to A Spot For Tea. She always brightens my day with her kind words, support and prayers. Its good to have friends that feel that A Spot For Tea is home. Dolores you don't how much that meant to me. You girls are wonderful. Susie we miss you!

One of my favorite customers is Irma Warr. After earning a degree in religious education from Minnesota's Northwestern College, Irma worked at Minnetonka Community Church with Tim LaHaye, and later served on staff with The Navigators. After moving to Oklahoma City, she married Gene Warr in 1964 and began traveling extensively on an international scale, speaking at conferences on the husband-wife relationship. Irma's ministry with wives focuses on discipleship and instruction for being the kind of wife and mother that Scripture commands.

Irma and her husband Gene helped establish Warr Acres the community that the tearoom resides in. Gene went to be with the Lord a few years ago and Irma continues to provide mentoring to women in our community. It is always a delight to see her and her many friends and family she brings to the tearoom.

When you turn 50 years old you get to wear a crown unless you are going through a very hard time and then get chosen to wear your crown earlier. Almost like a badge of courage. When you go out you get to wear your crown on your birthdays or sometimes even when you're having a bad day and you need a pick up from your good friends...can we all relate to that one? We all need moments of celebration with our friends where we celebrate being a woman, our good times and even our times of brokeness and tears.



Becca reminded me that we are Daughters of the King.

Emily's 40th Birthday

Our friend Emily Wingard's 40th birthday was celebrated today with her two sisters, Anita and Anna who flew in from Florida this morning. The rest of the group are from Thomas, Oklahoma. Also pictured were Margaret Schrock, Martha Miller, Glenda Miller, Merlene Wingard and Loretta Wingard.

Emily's beautiful 16 year old daughter passed away two months ago. We have been doing our best to support her and celebrate the good things in her life. This is the tea house Emily had looked up a while back on the internet and we were delighted that it's the same one we found.

This has been wonderful! Thank you.

Tea Friends

Step inside A Spot for Tea and the cares of the world seem to quickly drift away. We hope that the soft scents of tea and the fresh-baked vanilla muffins perfume the air, while you can chatter away with your friends. It should be a haven for your insides a place to take a deep breath and relax and enjoy.

We consider that we are welcoming friends and family for each and every customer who walks through our gracious doors. We have found that taking a tea break even 30 minutes is something you do just for you. We need that as women and caretakers to remember to take care of ourselves too, and take a few minutes to rejuvenate, just for our own peace of mind.

Louise Miller is 89 years old today and the ladies in the bible study are helping her celebrate. I have known Louise since I was 15 years old. I have been in bible study with her since 1995 and she is a precious part of my spiritual heritage. She has such a strong relationship with Jesus and loves the Word. She said today she hopes she lives to be 100 years old...We do too.

Holiday 2008 Newsletter

I invited a friend to have lunch with me at "A Spot For Tea". We ate a delicious meal, reveled in the tasty food and the gorgeous decor of the tearoom for a while, and then talked at length about our spiritual journeys. We were in total agreement that God had placed us where we were supposed to be. We spoke about so many decisions that were taking place at that moment. It was a very uplifting time for both of us as we shared the same philosophy regarding our walk with the Lord.

We were just about ready to take our tickets to the cashier when this nice looking young lady, about 40, walked up to our table. Neither of us had ever seen her before. She simply stated that she had a message to give us and proceeded to do so. We were too stunned to ask questions, so we just looked at each other and listened.

It is hard to remember exactly what she said, but in essence, she told us that what were doing was the right thing to do, and that we were in the right place. As she turned away, we looked at each other in amazement and in gratitude to the Lord for giving us the extra confirmation. We just praised and thanked the Lord for those words of encouragement.

God has various ways to speak to us and let us know that we are in His will, and how grateful I am to the Lord to know that He is with us and He makes it so obvious through our brothers and sisters in Christ. Who knows? Was she an angel of the Lord? We don't know, but at any rate, it was a very special Word from God for us that day.

Hebrews 13:1-2 "Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it."

Two Preacher's Kids or Two Peas In A Pod

Jeanne and her mom have been customers at A Spot For Tea for years. They have attended all of our Mother's Day teas except this year because of illness. It wasn't until recently while visiting with Jeanne about her mother that I became aware that we shared more than our love for tea.

Jeanne's father was a Methodist pastor for over twenty years. Pastoring in small towns like Goodwell, Purcell, Mangum, Britton, Pauls Valley and larger towns like Tulsa's New Haven and First Church in Moore. Taking on a different roll from pastor as a District Superintendant in McAlester. My father was also a Methodist pastor for over twenty years.

Jeanne's mother, Mrs. Heaton, became seriously ill in April 2009 and was in the hospital for a long time and was not able to attend our Mother's Day Tea. Finally, after much prayer she was returning to her place of residency at Spanish Cove in a different wing for rehab. I always ask Jeanne how her mom is doing. One day over tea she was telling me that her mom doesn't like change and didn't want to move back to the west wing where her friends were. I asked her why and she told me how they had lived in parsonages and had moved every five years.

"Every time we moved," Jeanne said "mom would always cry and say I will never meet people this nice again at our next appointment." I immediately felt a kinship with Jeanne and Mrs. Heaton having experienced the same type of moves: Salem, Georgia; Alex, Tulsa (Prattville), Marlow, Tulsa (Sheridan Avenue) and finally Putnam City Methodist here in Oklahoma City where we moved when I was a sophmore in high school.

In fact, it has always amazed me that God would move us four blocks from where my dad had pastored on 42nd street and MacArthur to 38th and MacArthur which in now the home to A Spot For Tea. I would have never dreamed in a million years that I would have lived in Dallas only to find my way back to this post so close to home. I graduated from Putnam City High School in 1981.

Jeanne and I were talking about moving and the upheaval of packing your bags but leaving the furniture for the next pastor's family. It never really felt like home until mom had all her things unpacked, pictures on the wall and dishes in the cabinets. We talked about how moving every five years helps with the clutter. You can't really be a packrack when you don't have that long to accumulate before the next move. It helps you not to get so attached to material things. People seem to hold the true value when you think about places you've lived and the memories you shared.

I knew immediately why I had always felt so much like I wanted to give her mom a big hug and squeeze. It takes a special lady to be a pastor's wife. Jeanne says that her mom is now able to walk about a block and soon we are hoping Mrs. Heaton will be able to come for a visit. We will be saving her a spot for lovely cup of tea.

John 14:1-4 "Jesus said, Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me. There are many rooms in my Father's house; I would not tell you this is it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you. After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me so that you may be where I am."

John called me a couple of weeks ago and said that he wanted to arrange for something special on Lindy's 30th birthday. They had never had tea upstairs in the Queen's Room and we decided in front of the fireplace would be the perfect place for them to have some quality time together. Della was their own designated tea server to make Lindy feel like a queen.

How sweet a guy...to plan a surprise tea for his wife who is expecting their first baby (baby boy Zane is due on January 10th) and so what a treat for me to get to be in on the surprise.
